Acknowledgements At this moment, I would like to thank my Honors Thesis Coordinator Dr. Stephen Fritz for his continuous support with my Honors Thesis. Throughout my undergraduate career, lectures given by Dr. Fritz have inspired me to engage in more research and to ask more questions. I would also like express gratitude to my Thesis Readers Dr. O'Brien and Dr. Achilov for taking their time to read my drafts and give me advice when needed. Further I would like to thank Henry and Anne Higgins, my American Host Family, who have encouraged me in a great manner to aspire for more and to work hard to achieve my goals. Without the help of my uncle Dr. Lothar Wittmann and my cousin Dr. Frank Walthes, who provided me with vital information and documents about my grandfather Alfred Wittmann, I would have not been able to conduct my research on our family.
